The Caudron 870 was ordered in late 1938 by France. Designed by Otfïnovsky, it met the needs of two-seater advanced aircraft (category P2). it made its first flight in January 1940, piloted by Delmotte. Two prototypes were built, the 01 with undercarriage going backwards in fairings, the 02 had fixed streamlined undercarriage. They were both captured by the Germans at Bricy. The 01 was used as a decoy on the false Cerqueux terrain. It received the  black crosses, but certainly never flew with them.
