On the initiative of Professor Prandtl, a gliding group (Akaflieg) was formed in 1926 at the Sports Institute of the University of Goettingen. In 1930 a technically oriented flight group (FLAVAG) was founded at the Goettingen Aerodynamic Research Institute. Despite unity efforts in the "Third Reich", Akaflieg was able to be re-established after an interruption and the tasks of FLAVAG were taken over by the aviation technical group in Goettingen until 1945. In addition to these two flying groups, model flying was another group represented.
1927: Discovery of the "Weper" hang glider airfield by members of the AVA Göttingen who were enthusiastic about flying and later founding members of the FLAVAG. Some name 1927, others 1928 as the beginning of flying on the Weper. We tend to the statements of Marlies Müller-Mahr, who refers to long-established Fredelsloher. In any case, it was a start with many obstacles and interruptions. You can take that literally: Breaks in the isolated trees and pasture fences were the order of the day and interrupted the activity for weeks...
1931: Founding of the "Flying Group at the AVA Göttingen" (FLAVAG). FLAVAG carries out flight operations on the Weper, on the Faßberg and on the Kerstlingeröder Feld. In their workshop, with the help of unemployed people who were organized in a kind of ABM, several of their own designs with remarkable flight performance were created. One of the consequences: FLAVAG wins the prize of 60 RM offered by the Göttinger Zeitung and the city of Göttingen for the first gliding flight over one hour within a radius of 6 km from the city of Göttingen!
1935: Under pressure from the National Socialist regime, the name was changed to "Aeronautical Technical Group at the University of Göttingen (FFG Göttingen)" An interesting article on this in the commemorative publication on the 60th anniversary of aerospace research in Göttingen (unfortunately no author named, possibly Hans Udally)
