D-ETON
Flugzeugbau Kiel GmbH was founded in 1934 as a so-called shadow factory. The first owner was Sachsenberg AG, which later sold the plant to Howaldswerke AG Kiel. To prove its ability to build aircraft, the new factory had to design and build a single-seater trainer aircraft. In 1934, under the direction of graduate engineer Hans Erfahrt, a cantilevered biplane with a fixed rear wheel chassis and an open driver's seat was developed. The horizontal stabilizer was mounted high on the side fin and braced towards the fuselage. The FK166 was a complete wooden construction, the outer skin was made of hot-pressed plywood. Only the end of the fuselage and the rudders were covered with fabric. The upper and lower wings
had ailerons. Interestingly, the wings could be folded backwards, so that the aircraft could be hung on a car. Only one prototype of the FK 166 was built, which had its maiden flight in September 1934. The aircraft was given the civilian registration D-ETON and was sent to the pilot school in Sorau for a short time. Her further fate is unknown. Flugzeugbau Kiel GmbH did not develop any further models of its own, it built parts for other manufacturers and repaired seaplanes, such as the He 42, the He 51/See and the W 34/See. Later, Weserflug AG took over the plant and relocated it to Nordenkem. On the factory premises in Kiel, Howaldswerke AG built submarines.
