The international touring plant- competition for the Cup
of Italy, which was recently put up bv the Italian Air De-
partment, was held at Rome, Oct. 11-12, last. The contest
was limited to two-place tractor airplanes equipped with a
single engine developing from 40 to 90 hp. and fitted with
dual control. The contest load included fuel and oil for a
flight 300 km. (186 mi.), plus a pay load of 385 lb. A
maximum low speed of 37 mi./hr., a minimum high speed of 62
mi./hr. and a climb of 3,300 ft. in 15 min. were also im-
posed.
The competition was held over a 50 km. circeuit around
Rome. Of the eight entries received three, the Montorfano
R7 biplane, the Gabardini monoplane and the German Alba-
tros did not participate. The remaining five entries included
an Italian Macchi 20 biplane (45 hp. Anzani), a French
Caudron C127 biplane (80 hp. Le Rhone), a German Udet
U 10 monoplane (55 hp. Siemens-Halske), and two of the
now Junkers model T convertible mono-biplanes. One of the
Junkers ships, fitted as a monoplane had a 55 hp. Siemens-
Halske enirine, while the other ship, rigged as a biplane, was
equipped with a 75 hp. engine of the same make.
The Udet and the Junkers biplane were eliminated in the
qualifyirg trials, both ships having failed to satisfy the min-
imum landing speed requirements. While these two ships
subsequently flew in the rare in an unofficial capacity, there
wore only three official contestants: The Macchi piloted by
G. de Briganti, the Caudron piloted by the French pilot
Béchéler. and the Junkers monoplane piloted by the German
pilot Plauth. The two Junkers ships both had forced land-
dings owing to engine trouble and withdrew from the race, and
the Udet was officially out of the race, the contest became
one between the Macchi and the Caudron. De Briganti's
Macchi won the race, being awarded the first prise of 150,000 Lire
Béchéler's Caudron secured second place with a
cash prize of 50,000 Lire.
The Macchi 20 is a comparatively old ship, having been
built in 1920. It won the Mapelli Cup for sport planes in 1921
and 1922. Its general characteristics are as follows: span 26 ft. 5 in., length 18 ft. 7 in., wing area 216 sq. ft., weght empty 583 lb., weight loaded 1078 lb., high speed 76.8 mi/hr.. climb 3300 in 14 min., range 300 mi.

The Macchi model 20 two-place sport plane (45 hp. Anzani) on which N. Briganti won the Italian touring plane competition
