The A 50 “Junior” sports aircraft was designated EF 31 during its development phase. The project, initially titled “Junkers- Light Aircraft”, was first mentioned in a meeting on December 20, 1927. A surviving document dated May 11, 1928, is also available. The remaining three-sided fuselage, designated as
EF31 M. Design. From this, it can be concluded that there were already three earlier EF 31 designs in the months of March/April 1928. On May 30, 1928, an inspection of the mock-up of the fuselage and center wing section had already taken place. Apparently, several changes resulted from this, because a fifth design was created on July 23, 1928. The decision to assign the EF 31 the type number J 50 and to begin construction is dated October 1, 1928.
The first flight of the aircraft, finally designated A 50 “Juni-
or”, took place on February 13, 1929.
