With the founding of the then Martens Flying School in 1924, an era on the Wasserkuppe began that has now lasted nine decades. Fritz Stamer is recorded in the annals as the first headmaster. Stamer worked there for another 12 years as a flight instructor and headmaster. In 1932, the school received its official name, "Wasserkuppe Gliding School." From 1937 until 1945, it was incorporated into the Reich Gliding School.
